Making clothes for myself is the whole reason I fell in love with crochet. So when I'd already made a scarf using a gorgeous geometric YouTube pattern, I thought — what if I took that same stitch and made something wearable? A vest felt like the perfect challenge.

Why Black Was the Right Call

I chose black deliberately. It has this quality of making crochet look polished and professional, like something you'd find in a boutique rather than a craft fair. And yes, it also hides any tension inconsistencies beautifully — no judgement, we've all been there. But the real magic of this pattern in black? Depending on how the light hits it, you can see pentagons AND flowers in the same stitch. It genuinely looks like two different patterns at once, which I find endlessly cool.

Pattern & Materials

I followed a YouTube tutorial for the stitch pattern — the same one I'd used for my scarf — which made it easy to scale up into a vest shape. The pattern was very easy to follow and the repetition made it quite meditative once you get going. My trusty 3mm hook made an appearance here (it might genuinely be my most-used hook at this point).

Tips Before You Start

Practice the stitch repeat on a swatch first — once it clicks, the rhythm becomes second nature. Black yarn can be harder to see in low light, so work near a good lamp. And trust the pattern: what looks like a tangle of chains mid-project transforms into something genuinely beautiful once you're done. Wear it over a white tee with a silver belt and you'll understand why I'm already planning my next colourway.
